Is There A Link Between Marijuana Use And Mental Illness?

Thousands of people believe marijuana dispensaries should become legal within the US and indeed most regions of the world. However, this is still a drug and one which is very much dangerous no matter how often you consume it. One question which is on many people’s mind is whether or not there is a link between mental illness and the use of marijuana? So, is there any definitive links?

Studies Conducted

There have been a number of studies conducted over the use of marijuana and the results have been surprising. There is an increased risk of someone developing mental illnesses such as depression, anxiety and even schizophrenia. No matter which way you look at it, these illnesses are life changing and very serious. Anxiety can be a very debilitating illness, one which destroys the life of the sufferer and it is the same for those with depression. Schizophrenia is life altering and there have been a lot of psychotic disorders linked to the use of marijuana. While many look at the so-called benefits of marijuana, it is the side effects which cause most concern.

Occasional Use

There is a smaller risk of developing a mental illness when someone uses drugs occasionally but there is still a risk. Now, in most cases, those who use the drug infrequently or once every year can still find risks associated with its uses. Some may find they are at greater risk than others simply down to a variety of factors such as genetics and their current mental state. However, anyone who consumes drugs such as marijuana can be at greater risk even if they consume it one time. They aren’t just potentially at risk of developing a need for the drug but potentially increase the risk of them developing a mental illness. There really are no benefits of marijuana even though many believe there is – the negatives outweigh any potential positives.

The Bottom Line

To be honest, there are potential mental illnesses which are associated with the use of marijuana but despite this, there are still going to be thousands, if not millions, who will continue to use illegal drugs. Now, this decision is down to each and every individual but there are major worries to be aware of and think very carefully about was well. While you might think the occasional use of marijuana isn’t harmful it is never good because it can have many side effects and can of course be addictive as well. While many believe the benefits of marijuana can outweigh the negatives, you may want to think twice. Find out more in our post here.

Think Twice

Mental illness can be serious no matter how small or insignificant the illness appears to be. A mental illness can affect anyone at any time and those who are already in the danger zone can be greatly affected. However, those who have never had issues with mental illness can still be affected because marijuana is very powerful and can alter a person’s mind entirely. This is something you have to think about when you think the benefits of marijuana are somehow positive, they are not.
